Objectives:
• Provide the audience an in-depth understanding of the development of artificial intelligence/automation industry.
• Promote the awareness of mental health issues and bridge the knowledge gaps of the new development of treatment strategies.
• Foster the exchange of innovative ideas and practical recommendations from concerned scientists and experts in providing their recommendations to the public and local communities on issues impacting the Asian community.

Topics:
(1) Impact and New Opportunities of Artificial Intelligence/Autonomous Technologies
(2) Mental Health: Awareness, Prevention and Treatment

Session I. Artificial Intelligence

The development of artificial intelligence/automation technology industry is an emerging trend and a focus of the Ministry of Science and Technology of Taiwan. In addition, the recent triumph of AlphaGo in defeating the best professional go player and the development of driverless cars not only indicate rapid growth and opportunities that come with such technological advancement, but also present challenges of AI's impact to the global economy, as expressed at the 2017 World Economic Forum. In this session, the following perspectives will be presented and discussed:
• What kind of industries are being affected the most?
• Where are the new opportunities?
• What government can do to help the society in facing this trend toward automation?

Session II.  Mental Health

Mental health is an important health concern in industrialized countries, including Taiwan. The cultural influence, social stigma, and misconception toward mental health issues pose significant challenges to timing diagnosis and treatment.  Ignoring these issues could result in the loss of potential economic and social opportunities, especially as the biomedical industry becomes one of the heavily invested innovative programs in Taiwan.  This session presents an opportunity to bridge such knowledge gap while serves as a follow-up discussion from last year’s symposium on Alzheimer’s disease from the following perspectives:
• Awareness promotion
• Prevention & treatment strategies

Warm and interactive luncheon with former President Whang-Peng

The CAPA-DC hosted a warm reunion luncheon for our first President Academician Jacqueline Whang-Peng and CAPA members at the Far East restaurant on April 8. In addition to her old friends and CAPA members, the luncheon with Jackie also attracted many non-CAPA members to attend. There were almost sixty people in the luncheon, including students who came all the way from Johns Hopkins University.

The luncheon opened with the presentation of a meaningful gift to the former President Whang-Peng: the 40th Anniversary Special Publication of CAPA-DC. Then, as an old friend of Jackie, Academician De-Maw Chuang introduced her to the audience. The former President Whang-Peng first talked about a twisted story of her career jump from the medical front line to academic research when she was in the DC area. Then she reviewed the motivation of her return to Taiwan and her experiences and contributions there. Finally, she encouraged all CAPA members, professionals in varied areas in the greater DC area, could use their personal influence from abroad to help our homeland Taiwan. Throughout the luncheon, the warm interactions amount Jackie and her old friends were touching, and her encouragement and support for the younger generations was admirable.
